What is the technology behind the Sinn DIAPAL?

Sinn filed patents for the DIAPAL technology several years ago, and set a new market trend.

This new technology has been a topic of great discussion on Internet forums over the past two years.  Watches require service every few years because traditional escapement wheels and pallets need oil lubrication to avoid friction.

Sinn used the technological innovations of the space program to develop a lubrication-free escapement and named it DIAPAL, in reference to the initial friction-reducing technique of replacing the ruby pallet stones by diamonds (DIAmond PALlets).

The Sinn 756 UTC DIAPAL chronograph is the first watch in their product line to be fitted with this new DIAPAL escapement, which has been further refined over the years to no longer require diamonds to reduce the friction, but rather a special coating material within the escapement.

Currently, the DIAPAL technology is available only on the Sinn 756 UTC series, although a new 757 DIAPAL is in development.
